About Pregnancy Weight Gain

Healthy weight gain during pregnancy is important for your baby's development. The recommended amount depends on your pre-pregnancy BMI (Body Mass Index).

Generally, it is recommended that pregnant women gain only 0.5-2 kg (1-4 lbs) during the first trimester, and about 0.4 kg (0.9 lb) per week during the remainder of the pregnancy for women with normal BMI.

The Institute of Medicine provides weight gain guidelines based on pre-pregnancy BMI. Women who are underweight should gain 12.5-18 kg (28-40 lbs), normal weight women should gain 11.5-16 kg (25-35 lbs), overweight women should gain 7-11.5 kg (15-25 lbs), and women with obesity should gain 5-9 kg (11-20 lbs).
