When you undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF), your due date is calculated differently than a pregnancy that occurs naturally. Instead of using the first day of your last menstrual period, we use your embryo transfer date.
For a 3-day embryo transfer, we add 263 days to your transfer date to estimate your due date. This accounts for the 266 days of a typical pregnancy minus the 3 days your embryo developed in the lab before transfer.
For a 5-day embryo transfer (blastocyst transfer), we add 261 days to your transfer date. This accounts for the 266 days of a typical pregnancy minus the 5 days your embryo developed in the lab before transfer.
Remember that only about 4% of babies are born on their exact due date. Most babies arrive within a window of about two weeks before or after the estimated due date.
